Let me start this off by apologizing, because I know the topic of trigger warnings and rating systems has been up for discussion in the past few years with no one really coming to a decisive conclusion on the matter. It is because of that ambiguity that I feel the need to explain why, as the writer, I feel White Houses is meant for teens, even though some of the content may be considered too mature.
In White Houses, there is a heavy amount of marijuana smoking, multitudes of cursing, and “adult themes” of sexual nature. Many people would read my manuscript and believe that it is unpublishable in the Young Adult market due to those things. To me, it is because of those things that it is perfect for the Young Adult market. To me, the best books to read as a teenager are the ones that are relevant to your reality, and drugs, cursing, and sex are all things that I remember distinctively being a huge aspect of my personal teenage years.
So let’s break it down, shall we?
